The Competitions

Our bread and butter – the events that earn our funding.

Winter Postal Leagues

These leagues involve the organisers posting a number of stickers to the club. One sticker per-person, per-round (where a round is one ten-shot card). Most leagues consist of 10 to 14 rounds, and two rounds have to be shot every three weeks or so. The leagues run roughly from October to April. The stickers are attached to the cards, and when the cards have been shot, they are collected by the club secretary and posted to an impartial scorer, who also scores the cards for the opposing team. In the coming season we will shoot in four Winter Postal Leagues:

6 Teams in the Hampshire County League (Ranging from Division 1 to Div. 12)

4 Teams in the Inter-University League

1 Team in the National Prone League

1 Team in the National Standing and Kneeling League

There are also a number of Individual and Pairs competitions which individual members are welcome to enter independently.

In 2007/08 year SURC won Division 1 of the Inter-University League, with the other teams placing very well in their divisions, as well as doing superbly in the Hampshire County League. The 2007/08 season was the second time the club entered teams into the National Leagues, and both the S&K, and the prone team won their divisions.

Shoulder-To-Shoulder Meetings

We enter 2 teams into the Southampton Winter STS League which involves either us travelling to opposing club’s ranges on Wednesday evenings, or them coming to ours, and literally shooting shoulder to shoulder, rather than posting our cards away. Cards are scored there and then by the two captains and the outcome decided, which means no appeals can be made on the scores at a later date. In 2006/07 the A-Team won Division 1 of the league – for the first time in the club’s history!

BUCS!!!

The most important STS event, and indeed the most important event in our calendar is the Inter-Universities Match, which is held at Appleton Rifle Club near Warrington.

SURC has won the main team competition at Appleton for the past 5 years, and done exceedingly well in other events. Everyone on the Southampton squad, even those not on the main team of 8, usually comes in the top 50% of the individual rankings. In 2008, SURC’s trophy haul earned more BUCS points for Southampton than any other single club (the Sailing Club have held this position for many years).
