SOUTHAMPTON Inter – Uni Match

This is a report on the inter-university rifle match that our rifle club hosted on the 30th November.

Four universities (including us) took part, all with a good mixture of experienced and new shooters. As I hope you can see from the scores below everyone from Southampton did their club proud. I was especially impressed by our new shooters who, considering it was their first match experience, and on a strange range, brought it all together and shot brilliantly.

Team scores (each made up of six shooters) were as follows:

Team                           Score
1st     Southampton ‘A’          1144
2nd     Oxford ‘A’                   1131
3rd     Cambridge ‘A’              1124
4th     Oxford ‘B’                    1073
5th     Reading ‘A’                  1052
6th     Southampton ‘B’          1047 (BRILLIANT score considering 4 team members were novices)
(A full list of scores can be found in the ‘Files’ section under’Results’)

Much fun was had by all. Considering the number of shooters it all went very smoothly, mostly due to help by brilliant Southampton people. Special thanks to:

Jen for food and drink and general organisation
Charlie for range officering
Rich and Lawrence for some more range officering, scoring and stats
All drivers for transport

The one thing I think this match has proved is that meeting, socialising with and shooting shoulder-to-shoulder against other universities is FUN and also a fantastic experience for novice shooters. The next match is currently pencilled in for away at Oxford at the end of Jan/early Feb 2009, so keep your eye on the e-mails after Christmas if you want to take part.

Thanks again to everyone for taking part,

Sam x
SURC Pres.
